Community College Leadership (CCL) Ph.D. in Education and Human Resource Studies

The Community College Leadership (CCL) Program is designed to meet the needs of persons interested in leadership positions at community colleges and other higher education institutions. The CCL Program offers you the opportunity to improve your practice if you are currently serving in a leadership position. If you are seeking a leadership position, the CCL program offers you the opportunity to develop the cognitive, emotional, and interpersonal skills required for success in such appointments.

Program Objectives

  • To provide a comprehensive and progressive doctoral curriculum that develops the skills needed to successfully lead community colleges.
  • To develop your knowledge base concerning community colleges, effective teaching, and student learning.
  • To instill or reinforce a commitment to the critical engagement of diversity.
  • To assist you in exploring ways to strengthen commitments to open access, the comprehensive mission, and instructional quality.

Program Prerequisites

A master's degree (30 semester credits minimum) earned from a regionally accredited institution is required.

Program Curriculum

A total of 30 credits in core courses and 30 credits in research are required to complete this degree program.

Year One - Core Courses, Specialization (12 credits)

  • EDCL 703 – Community College Leadership (3 cr.)
  • EDCL 710 – Community College Finance (3 cr.)

  • EDUC 709 – Leadership Development (3 cr.)

Summer

  • EDCL 750 – Simulated Presidential Cabinet I (3 cr.)
  • EDCL 751 – Simulated Presidential Cabinet II (3 cr.)

Year Three - Research (13-18 Credits)

  • EDRM 700 – Quantitative Research Methods (3 cr.)
  • EDRM 705 – Qualitative Data Analysis (3 cr.)

Audio Conferencing

If you are learning at a distance, you can call into a special conference "bridge" number and participate in discussions with the on-campus students. You are responsible for long distance charges and must have a speaker phone with mute capability.

Application and Admission Requirements

This program follows Track II admission requirements and procedures with the following adaptations:

  • A statement of your professional goals describing the relationship between your goals and the CCL Ph.D. program (labeled as Part A).
  • A statement describing and explaining your vision for the future of the open access, comprehensive, and culturally diverse community college (labeled as Part B).
  • Evidence of a completed master's degree.
  • Three letters of reference from people who speak to your leadership ability or potential.

Statements must be no longer than 5 double-spaced pages.

Degree at a Glance

Delivery

Online, on-campus, and audio conferencing. One on-campus visit per fall and spring semester is required to complete the program.
