- List the three basic steps involved in preoperative assessment of the cancer patient.
- For each step, list the diagnostic options available to answer the question and describe case criteria that would allow appropriate application of those diagnostic tests
- List basic treatment options available.
- List sequelae to skipped or eliminated diagnostic steps

During five years in general and small animal practice, Dr. Dernell's interest in oncology grew to the point of seeking specialization. His surgical residency at Washington was followed by surgical and research fellowships, and then a faculty position with the Animal Cancer Center at Colorado State University. He is currently involved in clinical practice as well as teaching and research in veterinary oncology. He has special interests in drug delivery, treatment of severe infection and soft tissue reconstruction.
