- List the criteria and steps involved with the preoperative planning of surgical margins.
- Describe the process and criteria used to conduct a postoperative evaluation of margins for the small animal cancer patient.
- Determine when it is appropriate to use cryotherapy to treat cancerous tumors.

During five years in general and small animal practice, Dr. Dernell's interest in oncology grew to the point of seeking specialization. His surgical residency at Washington was followed by surgical and research fellowships, and then a faculty position with the Animal Cancer Center at Colorado State University. He is currently involved in clinical practice as well as teaching and research in veterinary oncology. He has special interests in drug delivery, treatment of severe infection and soft tissue reconstruction.
