This course will help provide that foundation by providing an introduction to the origins and development of opera, primarily using the classic operas and recordings of singers from the past and present. The emphasis will be on what to listen for, singing lines, phrasing, and interpretive qualities, as well as enjoying the glory of the human voice. As part of this class, you will be invited to attend a rehearsal for Puccini’s Turandot.

Sandy Kern

Sandy Kern, Ph.D., has been an opera buff since the age of 17, when he had the opportunity to sell libretti (the stories and texts of the operas), at the old Metropolitan Opera house for almost three years; as part of that experience, he heard over 100 opera performances. When OLLI organizers queried who in the community could teach a course on opera, a wide variety of persons gave the same name -- Sandy Kern! For his "day job" Dr. Kern teaches and does research in the Physics Department at CSU.
