OSHR 1011 - Hindu and Buddhist Thought and Art

Noncredit / Fall 2008 NEW

Delivery/Location: Fort Collins

This course is offered through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Colorado State University. You must be a member of Osher to enroll in this course.

Many things are said of globalization’s impact today. One of the fruits of contact with other countries is coming to understand more about the rich cultural expressions they offer. Wisdom traditions of the East open many windows and doors through thought, art, and music. A challenge awaits you to let the sun into new rooms of your mind and spirit.

The purpose of this seminar is two-fold: first to come to some understanding of Hindu and Buddhist thought, and secondly to explore the relevance of these perspectives to our own lives. Cultural expressions of these two wisdom traditions, such as music and art, will also be touched upon. The last session of the seminar will be held at the Denver Art Museum to view Hindu and Buddhist art. Participants will arrange their own transportation to the museum (carpooling will be encouraged).

Seminar participants should read two novels which will be the basis of our discussion at the first meeting.
- Desai, Kiran. (1998). Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard. Atlantic Monthly Press.
- Hesse, Hermann. (2007). Siddhartha. Bantam Books.

In addition to the two short novels to be read prior to the first class session, selected readings from studies of these two traditions will be the basis for our discussions

Since this is a seminar, participants will be expected to do the readings ahead of time and actively discuss the following:
- Eck, Diana L. (latest edition). Darsan: Seeing the Divine Image in India. Anima Books. [ISBN 0-89012-042-0; 75 pages].
- Hanh, Thich Nhat. (latest edition). The Heart of Understanding. Parallax Press. [ISBN 0-938077-11-2; 54 pages].
- Rahula, Walpola. (latest edition). What the Buddha Taught. Grove Press. [ISBN 0-394-17827-0; will assign just portions].

Noncredit courses do not produce academic credit nor appear on a Colorado State University academic transcript.
