This course is offered through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Colorado State University.
Participants will study and discuss the historical background of the Middle East as it relates to the United States. This course will focus on major issues including understanding religions, ethnic differences, oil, water, and U.S. political involvement.
Topics will include:
- Historical Snapshot of the Old Middle East to the End of the Cold War,
- Role of Religion as Controlling Power in the Middle East,
- Importance of Ethnicity in the Middle East.
- Problem of Oil in the Middle East,
- Water: Another Major Issue in the Middle East,
- U.S. Involvement in the Middle East: Prospects for the Future.
Noncredit courses do not produce academic credit nor appear on a Colorado State University academic transcript.
Instructors
Dr. Bill Griswold taught in Colorado State University's History Department for 35 years where his primary focus was Middle East History. While at CSU, Dr. Griswold earned a number of recognitions, including an Outstanding Teacher Award, given by the CSU Alumni Association. Since retirement, Dr. Griswold has continued to speak about the Middle East to various church, business and professional groups in Northern Colorado.
