OSHR 1003 - What the Fortune Cookie Really Says: Use Herbs to Help Promote Your Health

Noncredit / Fall 2008 NEW

Delivery/Location: Fort Collins

This course is offered through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Colorado State University. You must be a member of Osher to enroll in this course.

You may know the names of many herbs, but do you know how they are used for wellness? For centuries, the Chinese have used a variety of herbs to treat many body conditions such as: high cholesterol, respiratory system issues, digestive and other stomach problems, pain, colds and sore throats, headaches, and more.

You will learn one method in this class - that is, the use of herbs. You will be introduced to their use in hospitals in China and then given examples of what kind of herbs are use to treat various and specific ailments. It is one thing to hear about these herbs; it is quite another to experience them!

While the first class is more of a lecture/discussion format, the last two sessions will involve your learning what is available in Asian markets to create delicious and healthy dishes. The focus will be on using various forms of herbs (including herb vegetables). One class will focus on hot foods, such as dumplings; another will focus on cold dishes. Let’s cook together, while sipping a cup of healthy tea!
