HDFS 101 - Individual and Family Development (GT-SS3)

Do you work with people every day? Do you want to learn more about your children’s development? Would you like to learn more about the family life cycle and its impact on family members? This course is designed for those who want to gain a better understanding of the developmental processes of individuals and families.

Physical development begins at conception and physical changes continue throughout life. Social, emotional and cognitive development begin in infancy, with continued growth and change in how we interact, feel and think for as long as we live. To be fully understood, individual development must be explored within the context of the family.

Based on developmental theory, this course introduces basic principles and sequences in human development and how the crucial element of family supports this development. Students study the impact of culture, health, education, peer groups, work and external forces that influence individuals and families. The course is interesting and useful for human service and education professionals, as well as for those who want to better understand their own families,

This course is part of the All University Core Curriculum (AUCC) 3C Social/Behavioral Sciences requirement and GT-SS3.

This course can be applied towards the:

• Human Development and Family Studies (B.S.)
