GSLL 2023 (Ergonomics 1: Improving Human Performance) or instructor permission.

Description

This ergonomics course has been designed for those students who wish to study the ergonomics of back injuries including:

  • Epidemiology of back injuries
  • Types of back injuries
  • Manual materials handling
  • Anatomy and physiology of the back
  • Static and dynamic postures
  • Biomechanics of lifting
  • Risk factors of back injury
  • Ergonomic evaluation of manual materials handling
  • Equipment and work design for prevention
  • Ergonomic controls for back injury prevention

The course prepares students at entry-level ergonomics theory and practice. It teaches about lifting safely, back disorders, work evaluation, equipment and design, and provides opportunities to develop skills for anticipation, recognition, evaluation and control of ergonomic hazards unique to manual materials handling aimed at preventing back injuries in the workplace.

This course can be applied towards the:

David Gilkey D.C. PhD, is a Certified Professional Ergonomist. He is Associate Professor and Director of Undergraduate Education in the Department of Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences at CSU. David is a skilled health practitioner with both a theoretical and practical knowledge base around workplace ergonomics. His areas of interest are diverse and include environmental and occupational human health, complimentary and alternative human health, construction safety and ergonomics, back pain and musculoskeletal pain syndromes among workers.
