EDAE 580A1 - Introduction to School/Community Safety

This is an introduction to issues related to world-wide school/community safety and the impact on communities and schools. This course will be grounded primarily by the history of school/community safety and its continuing evolution. The core areas of study for this course will include an international perspective in the following areas:

  • A review of critical historical, theoretical, and legal perspectives related to school/community safety
  • A review of key case studies and landmark events
  • An overview of research and evaluation strategies related to school/community safety
  • An overview of world-wide resources and best practices for schools and communities related to safety
  • An overview of specific international and cross-cultural perspectives that influence school/community safety

Dr. Andrew N. Briers, a police officer in the U.K., is the Coordinator for the Safer Schools Programme. The first officer in the U.K. to be placed in a school on a full time basis, he completed his M.A. on Community Policing and Truancy and was awarded the Fulbright Police Fellowship where he traveled to the U.S. to study the role of law enforcement agencies in schools as part of his PhD research in conjunction with Middlesex University. He was awarded the National Training Contract for Safer School Partnership.

Andy has spoken at Conferences in the U.K. and U.S. on youth crime and related strategies and is a senior lecturer at Middlesex University, Centre of Excellence for Work Based Learning. Andy has written numerous articles and the book "Safer School Communities." Receipt of the Fulbright Alumni Initiative Award enabled him to set up an exchange programme between U.K. and U.S. school based police officers. This has led to the creation of the Organizations for Excellence in Education at Colorado State University, where Andrew is a Professor adjunct.
