BSLL 1050 - Debriefing Oops! Woops! Ouch! Oh %#$&!: An Introduction to a Restorative Approach to Debrief Critical Incidents

Noncredit / Summer 2008

Delivery/Location: Off-Campus

In the modern business environment we are confronted with numerous mixed messages and paradoxical demands on both employees and management. On one hand we are required to be accountable and accept personal responsibility, adhere to policies and procedures, rules and regulations; work within the chain of command; and be on-time and error-free. On the other hand we are encouraged to take risks, be creative, self-directed, empowered and a good team member; anticipate the unknown and adapt to more and more change.

Within this environment, "stuff happens." The traditional response to critical incidents (accidents, mistakes, errors, blunders, mishaps, negligence), is to investigate, assess responsibility and blame, and punish or sanction. This workshop is an introduction to an alternative approach to responding to critical incidents in organizations. This approach encourages the use of restorative practices to establish a work culture characterized by authentic personal accountability, shared responsibility, co-learning and informed action.

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Name and identify critical incidents;
  • Design and facilitate a conversation that develops a shared understanding of the critical incident, including contributing factors and consequences;
  • Write and ask questions that promotes individual and team accountability and collaborative learning;
  • Foster a work culture [environment] that encourages civil, authentic, and respectful dialogue; and
  • Explore opportunities and barriers to implementation of a restorative practice response to critical incidents within their organization
  • Develop an action plan that minimizes or eliminates similar incidents in the future and increases individual and team commitment
